The slot trees are oldest instruments of the navigation. But do you know how they should be used with the compass? The slot tree is used as we normally use the compass with maps. First, the sailor or another person, who wants to go to another place, will take his compass on the side of the slot tree.
Then the person takes to the line of the slot, and then this person can travel between two known points using the only compass. The eldest slot trees were actual trees, where was made the slot for the navigation. But later those systems changed artificial, and the "slot machine" was put the stand, where were marked the lines for many targets.
The slot trees were popular in the coastal sea routes because the use of those things was cheaper because the person needed only the compass to take the directions for their ships or boats. And the other navigation equipment like sextants were unnecessary, but the purpose of these slot trees might not legal. In 1920's there was prohibited to sell alcohol in Finland, and then the prohibition caused the "need" to make the illegal alcohol in some islands. The only way to get the 96 percent "Potato spirit" was not to carry it from Estonia.
Another way was to make it in some islands in the south coast of Finland. And the police and customs were hard to find those spirit distilleries from those islands, but the spirit makers must find the right island. And that was the reason, why some trees are equipped with slots. Of course, some spirit what brought from Estonia was stored in some islands, and the slots were marked what those spirit sellers used when they wanted to find the right place because the marks in the maps would send the officials and competitors to those hidden warehouses. And I think that this might be the reason for slotting this tree above the text.
